The Bones of Love: The Way of Jesus

The reign of unity

Scientists now tell us
that the nature of the universe
is unified.

There is interconnectedness,
interdependence and belonging
with the whole community
of our planetary home.

It is unity expressed in diversity
and the essence of its power and presence
is love.

It is what the mystics
have always said.

This is the good news
of ‘the kingdom of heaven’,
which translates from the Aramaic
as the reign of unity.

Jesus spoke of it as love
with peace and justice for all,
a place of wholeness.

It is unity with all creation
and with God.

Jesus went throughout Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom.

Matthew 4.23

This book links cutting edge science with the words of Jesus. Science now shows that unity is the nature of the universe. Jesus talked about the kingdom of heaven which is the reign of unity in the Aramaic that he spoke. And the essence of both is love.
Using short reflections, I expand this topic and particularly look at love – the language that links life and spirit.
How would we and the world change if we lived in this concept of love?

Jane Upchurch has written a delightful set of poetic reflections on love, life and longing for a better way. Drawing on the teachings of Jesus, but coming from a universal perspective, this is a treasure to dip into during the seasons of the year, then to sit back and ponder on one’s own journey. How do we find the bones of love? What is our path? How do we react to life events? In simple short reflections, the author helps us to reappraise our own way of being and put a bigger love at the centre. From the cosmic picture to personal musings, there is something for everyone here.

Don MacGregor, retired Anglican priest, Author of ‘Blue Sky God’.

In this beautiful collection of reflections, prayers and poems, Jane draws us into her profound understanding of the nature of love – in God, in Jesus, in creation, in one another. Each speaks gently and powerfully to the heart. Wonderful images dance throughout – surfing the Spirit; gulls hanging on thermals; throwing thanks like confetti around God’s heart. With love flowing through her reflections on forgiveness and trust, healing and wisdom, gratitude and community, Jane connects us with how deeply we are one – with all creation and with God. ‘Mother Father God, my love and your love refresh each other. I am your home. You are my hearth.’

Catherine Wood, Anglican priest, Author of ‘Pips in the Wind: stories and allegories reflecting on the fruits of the Spirit.’
